Triumph TR8 Specs

The TR8 by market: the coupé, the 49-state convertible with carburettors, the injected convertible of California and then all of North America, and the British pilot cars. Every figure is as a brochure, a magazine, a club or an enthusiast site printed it, and where they disagree the comparison says so.

The TR8 was built to more than one specification, and the comparison on this page sets them side by side: the coupé, the convertible for 49 states with carburettors, the injected convertible that California had in the 1980 model year and all of North America in the 1981 model year, and the right-hand-drive cars built for Britain. It shows values only; where the sources give other figures, a small asterisk beside the value opens a note with every figure in print and who gives it. The sections below explain the figures that need it and set out, in small tables, what the comparison does not hold.

The factory's source is Jaguar Rover Triumph's American brochure, printed in April 1980, which gives the 49-state figures with California's in brackets. The four American magazine tests of 1980 add what they measured on their own cars: Road & Track and Motor Trend in June, Road Test in July and Car and Driver in August. The road tests tell what the testers thought.source 1source 2source 3source 4source 5

The 49-state convertible, 1980 model year

Outside California, the 1980 convertible breathed through two Zenith-Stromberg carburettors with automatic chokes and cleaned its exhaust with air injection, exhaust-gas recirculation and the brochure's "dual catalytic converters". Its rating is one of the few figures the brochure and the magazines agree on:

The rest of the country will get TR8s with engines fed by a pair of Stromberg carburetors, this setup producing 133 bhp at 5000 rpm and 174 lb-ft of torque at 3000 rpm.

Road & Track, June 1980

The brochure prints a lower torque figure than Road & Track and Road Test do, at the same engine speed, and the comparison's note gives both. Motor Trend printed a third figure for the carburettor engine, so far below the others that it is probably a misprint.source 1source 6source 2source 5source 4

The injected convertible, 1980 model year

California's convertible had Lucas/Bosch L-Jetronic injection with a Lucas control unit, run in a closed loop with a three-way catalyst and an oxygen sensor. Its power is the TR8's best-known dispute, because Jaguar Rover Triumph put two ratings into print in 1980, both SAE net. The magazines' press figures, which Road & Track, Motor Trend and Road Test printed, gave the lower; the company's own brochure of April 1980 gave the higher:

Horsepower: 133 @ 5000rpm (148 @ 5100rpm). Torque: 168 @ 3000rpm (180 @ 3250rpm).

Triumph TR8 brochure, Jaguar Rover Triumph Inc., April 1980

Car and Driver printed the brochure's figure for its injected car in August, and wrote that "Forty-nine-state cars get a pair of Zenith-Stromberg carburetors and fifteen less horsepower", which fits the higher figure. Motor Trend and Road Test print identical figures from the same press data, so they count as one source, not two. A Lucas engineer, quoted by triumphtr8.com, insisted on the lower figure. The comparison gives both, one of them behind its asterisk; the torque has three readings, and its note gives all of them.

The tests and the EPA give more than the comparison holds:

Chassis, body and dimensions

The suspension had MacPherson struts at the front, and at the back a live axle on four links with coil springs, with anti-roll bars at both ends. Its steering was power-assisted as standard, a General Motors Saginaw pump with an Adwest rack, as Road & Track reported in 1979. The front brakes were solid discs, which Autocar and Car and Driver both found thicker than the TR7's; their diameter is given differently by the brochure and the tests, and the comparison leads with the brochure's. The brochure's dimensions, weight and fuel tank lead in the comparison too, and the tests' own weighings, each with its label, are in its notes. Road & Track's data panel prints a fuel tank of 63.6 litres (16.8 US gallons), which no other source supports, and a number of turns of the steering wheel far above everyone else's, probably a misprint.

The 1981 model year

Every North American TR8 of the 1981 model year had the injection, certified in California under the engine family BJR215V5FA7, with exhaust-gas recirculation and a three-way catalyst in a closed loop. No source read settles the 1981 engine's power: Mike Cook's own data panel for a 1981 car prints a figure that is probably a misprint. Whether an automatic was offered that year is disputed too, and the versions page sets out both sides. triumphtr8.com's table gives the cars from chassis number 402027 taller gearing in fifth, 44.4 km/h (27.6 mph) per 1,000 rpm, but no factory source confirms a change.source 10source 6source 11source 7

The British pilot cars, 1980–81

Britain's right-hand-drive pilot cars ran on carburettors, with engines numbered 20E or 21E and more compression than the American ones; the chassis plate made for them rates them at a gross 1,420 kg, as the American TR8's does, though some carry a TR7 plate.

Type approval no. 377 gave the British car a design maximum speed; the comparison prints it beside the speed that triumphtr8.com, from Roy Ford's account, gives for the experimental car EXP 923 at MIRA.source 12source 13source 7source 14source 9source 15

Autocar's coupé, 1979

Autocar's John Miles drove YDU 617S, a left-hand-drive coupé built to American specification, in 1979. Its catalyst had been taken off so that it would run on leaded fuel, so it was neither a federal car nor a British one, and Miles's figures belong to that car alone. He printed the power British Leyland quoted then for the federal carburettor engine, which the comparison keeps apart from the injected car's ratings, and the maximum speed Triumph had computed for it. The comparison's coupé column, with its notes, gives the car's weight and brakes.
