Triumph TR8 Coupe
The first TR8s were fixed-head coupés: a pilot run built at Speke in 1977 for an American launch that never happened, and a second run from Canley in 1978 and 1979. The rarer of the TR8's two bodies, and the one most often claimed for cars that are not.
About the pictureA TR7 coupé, converted to a V8 according to its photographer

The TR8 began as a coupé. The first were built at Speke, in Liverpool, in 1977, with the TR7's fixed-head body and the ACN prefix to their chassis numbers, and a second run followed from Canley, numbered with TCN. Coupés offered as early TR8s are the commonest doubtful TR8s, triumphtr8.com finds, so this page ends with how to tell one. The convertible came later and outnumbered it many times over.source 1source 2source 3
The Speke pre-production coupés, 1977
Speke built the coupés between February and October 1977. The TR Drivers Club prints their numbers as "ACN 1 to ACN 1166", and triumphtr8.com as two ranges, ACN 00001 to 00116 and 01001 to 01200; both say that not every number was used. The club and Mike Cook give much the same size for the run, and this page's production tally prints both.
They were American-specification cars, built for a launch in the 1978 model year. Cook, who handled Jaguar Rover Triumph's press relations in America in those years, wrote in 1996 that BL's management put the launch off indefinitely, and that the cars already built gave it a chance to test the market instead:
One hundred forty-five 1978 TR8s were shipped over and issued to US and Canadian BL employees as company cars.
Most were automatics, and none carried any badges, "not even the Triumph name"; Cook and his wife ran a five-speed one for more than 40,000 km (25,000 miles). The TR Drivers Club puts it differently, saying that 95% of the Speke cars were shipped to the United States for evaluation and the rest kept in Britain for testing.
Some of those that stayed are known. Canley's experimental-fleet records list ACN 00012, registered SHP 658R, as ready for disposal in May 1981. triumphtr8.com describes it as a Brooklands Green coupé with "Sprint" decals on its sides, "V8" on its boot (trunk) lid and "TR7 Sprint" on its nose, and thinks it the car pictured in David Hardcastle's book on the Rover V8. The same records list two coupés from the Speke batch of 1977, WAC 272S and WAC 275S, used for testing in an environmental chamber and on a severe high-mileage programme, and the notable cars follow what became of them. BL Motorsport took a new left-hand-drive TR8 in May 1977, Motor Sport reported, to build its first V8 rally car.
The name on these early cars was not always TR8. triumphtr8.com writes that the badging "initially designated this FHC TR8 as TR7V8 but other FHC TR8's were badged TR8", and Cook that by late 1977 BL Motorsport's rally cars were often labelled "TR7 V-8". Motor Sport's Jeremy Walton assumed in 1978 that enough road cars "must have been made already for the American market to satisfy the FIA Group 4 regulations"; the Speke run, the only TR8s built by then apart from the prototypes, was much smaller than he supposed, and how the rally cars came to be homologated is the TR7's story.source 1source 4source 2source 5source 6source 3source 7source 8
The Canley coupés, 1978–79
Canley set aside chassis numbers TCN 150001 to 150198 for the 1978 model year and TCN 160001 to 160142 for the 1979 model year, and the TR Drivers Club thinks it "likely that most of these numbers were not used". BL's calendar-year table gives one figure for coupés, in 1979, split between home and export, while the club's own batch table enters the Canley coupés for America as "unknown". triumphtr8.com believes that about 155 TCN cars were built.
Where they went is not clear either. Mike Cook is quoted by the TR Drivers Club as saying that "Approximately 200 'and change' production coupes were sold as 1980 coupes" in America, beside the new convertible, and the club notes that he mentions no sales of 1979 models, "indicating perhaps that not many TCN cars were built or that those that were ended up in other markets (i.e. Canada)". Cook is also quoted as saying that exactly one coupé of the 1981 model year was sold, an engineering "cast-off" that apparently carried the number 199999.
Road & Track, expecting 2,500 TR8s for the 1980 model year, wrote in June 1980 that "Ten percent of that number will be TR8 coupes, though the closed body will not be offered in California". A higher total for all the coupés, Speke's and Canley's together, comes from a newsletter of the Triumph Wedge Owners Association and from an Austin Rover letter that triumphtr8.com reports; the tally shows both beside BL's figure, and no source reconciles them.
What a coupé has
Under the TR7's fixed-head body a TR8 coupé has Rover's V8 with two Zenith-Stromberg carburettors, to American specification, and an engine number beginning 10E to 13E. Most of the Speke cars were automatics, with the Borg-Warner gearbox (transmission); the rest had the five-speed manual. triumphtr8.com notes three details that set a coupé apart from the later convertibles: its body number ends CK for a left-hand-drive coupé, it has the TR7's steering wheel rather than the convertible's small leather-rimmed one, and on the early cars the battery in the boot sits in "a very neat box".
Inside, triumphtr8.com's trim codes give black or tan cord and red or green check for the Speke cars, with tan and blue check added in 1979, and round door locks and small headrests throughout. The specification on this page takes the coupé's length, height and weight from the American sales brochure that British Leyland's American company printed for it in September 1977.
In 1979 Autocar drove an engineering coupé, YDU 617S, white, left-hand drive and fitted with a cloth sunroof and air conditioning; what the magazine made of it is on the road tests page.source 11source 12source 13source 14source 15
Telling a genuine coupé
A genuine coupé has a chassis number beginning ACN or TCN, the N marking a TR8 coupé. It carries an American-style chassis plate, part TKC5574, in the door shut, with the number visible through the windscreen (windshield), and the engine number of an American carburettor car. triumphtr8.com warns against cars sold as pre-production coupés that were registered on a body number alone, carry a TR7 chassis number, or wear a later British registration than the R, S or T of 1976–78; a Heritage Certificate from the British Motor Museum's archive is the place to start. Identification explains the numbers.
